Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course Ontario

The Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider course enables healthcare professionals to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to better recognize and treat critically ill infants and children. The course materials are scenario-based, and a team approach is used to teach emergency management of pediatric patients approaching or already in respiratory or cardiac arrest, from the early minutes through patient stabilization and/or the transport phases of a pediatric emergency, in or out of the hospital.

Intended Audience

The PALS course is designed for healthcare professionals who initiate and direct advanced life support in pediatric emergencies and for healthcare students seeking first-time or renewed PALS-training credentials.

Course Overview

  • Recognition and treatment of infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest
  • Systematic approach to pediatric assessmen
  • Effective respiratory management
  • Validation of skills for one-person and two-person CPR and AED skills for infants and children
  • Defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion
  • Intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration
  • Effective resuscitation team dynamics

Course Prerequisites

Please be aware that the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) BLS is the pre-requisite course for PALS as of 2010.  They do not accept BLS certifications from any other organization.The plan would be to get the BLS done prior to the start of the PALS course, which your instructor can do for you. You can register for the corresponding BLS course to your cart before checking out. This course begins at 0800 on the first day of the course.

Course Duration

Course duration’s provided are based upon a student-instructor ratio for learning stations of 8:1, and does not include additional times needed for breaks or transitions, or additional students. Approximate length of course: 17 hours 15 minutes

Students must pass a written exam and skills test in order to qualify for a PALS Provider Course Completion Card.
